The Friuli Venezia Giulia region has proposed fast-tracking the development of the Udine railway hub, aiming to streamline procedures, secure rapid project approval, and gain access to funding in a timely manner. The initiative, which is in coordination with the relevant national Ministry, seeks to enhance the region’s infrastructure and improve logistical efficiency.

The announcement was made by the Regional Councillor for Infrastructure following a meeting with Aldo Isi, the newly appointed CEO of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), at the company’s headquarters in Rome.

The Udine railway hub is seen as a strategic priority for the region. Already an operational and functional part of Italy’s railway network, it serves as a key junction for several important rail corridors, connecting the region to broader European networks. Strengthening the hub’s capacity and constructing a new station at Cargnacco is expected to improve the flow of goods while bypassing Udine city, which currently faces urban planning constraints that hinder transportation efficiency.

The region’s railway infrastructure is crucial due to its positioning on three major European transport corridors: the Baltic-Adriatic, Mediterranean, and newly added Balkan corridors. These corridors help link the region’s well-established industrial base and ports, including Trieste and Monfalcone, to the broader European rail system.

The proposed enhancements also include the development of key infrastructure projects, such as the railway connection to the Porto Nogaro port. While Porto Nogaro is not part of the Port System Authority, it holds growing strategic significance in the region’s transport network.

The overall logistics platform of Friuli Venezia Giulia, though small in geographic size, is diverse and interconnected. The region’s integrated transport network is poised to strengthen its role in Italy’s and Europe’s growing logistics sector.
