Brazilian physicist and academic leader Marcelo Knobel has been appointed Executive Director of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), a UNESCO-affiliated organization dedicated to advancing science in developing countries. Knobel, known for his pioneering work in magnetism and his commitment to science education, succeeds ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar, who served as interim director.

Knobel brings decades of experience to his new role. As the 12th Rector of Brazil’s University of Campinas (Unicamp), he spearheaded initiatives in science communication and higher education. He also founded Unicamp’s Science Exploratory Museum and conducted research on public perceptions of science. A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Knobel has received numerous accolades, including Brazil’s National Order of Scientific Merit and the TWAS Young Scientist Prize.

“Marcelo Knobel’s exceptional track record as a scientist, educator, and advocate for science communication makes him an extraordinary asset for TWAS,” said Lidia Brito, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences.

Founded in 1983 in Trieste, Italy, TWAS supports scientists in the Global South through research grants, fellowships, and international partnerships. Under Knobel’s leadership, the organization aims to deepen its impact by fostering scientific collaboration and addressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

“Without science, we have no future,” Knobel said. “I look forward to helping TWAS provide opportunities for scientists and demonstrating how science is our greatest ally in creating a fairer, safer, and happier world.”

Knobel, who immigrated to Brazil from Argentina as a child, will officially assume his duties in January 2025.
