The 72nd Ljubljana Festival will reach its crescendo on September 3rd with a pair of concerts featuring some of classical music’s most illustrious figures. On Monday, Riccardo Chailly will lead the renowned Filarmonica della Scala, followed by a performance on Tuesday with the celebrated pianist Martha Argerich and conductor Charles Dutoit.
Founded by Claudio Abbado on January 25, 1982, the Filarmonica della Scala was modeled after the Vienna Philharmonic, with the goal of expanding the symphonic repertoire within the operatic tradition of Milan’s famed La Scala opera house. Over its 40-year history, the orchestra has garnered acclaim both in Italy and around the globe. In November 2015, Riccardo Chailly was appointed as the principal conductor, marking the beginning of a dynamic period characterized by international tours and collaborations with Decca Records. Among the notable releases is a 2015 album celebrating a century of new music performed at La Scala, featuring works by Verdi, Rossini, Puccini, and others.
Chailly’s upcoming Ljubljana performance will showcase the orchestra in a program that pairs Tchaikovsky’s monumental Fifth Symphony with Ravel’s intricate Daphnis et Chloé Suites 1 and 2, the latter described by Igor Stravinsky as “among the most beautiful things that all French music has produced.” This concert will conclude a brief European tour that included stops in Spain, Germany, and Austria.
The festival’s closing night will be marked by the return of Martha Argerich and Charles Dutoit. Although the couple shared only a few years together in their personal lives, they have maintained a long-standing artistic partnership that has dazzled audiences for decades. Argerich and Dutoit are known for their electrifying performances, and their Ljubljana concert promises to be no exception. The program will feature Fauré’s seldom-performed Pelléas et Mélisande, Dvořák’s widely beloved “New World” Symphony, and Ravel’s vibrant Piano Concerto in G major. Dutoit will conduct the Slovenian Philharmonic, an ensemble noted for its high caliber and continual growth.
Despite having sold out months in advance, a limited number of first-category seats for this performance have recently become available. Both concerts will take place at 8:00 PM in the grand hall of Cankarjev Dom, renowned for its exceptional acoustics and visibility.
