With the mayoral elections coming up on 3-4 October in our city, we did the math and found out Trieste has had 11 mayors since 1954 (26 if we count 1918-1947 and 1947-1954 leaders and 35 if we add the Austro-Hungarian rulers to the mix), and all of them were men. Is it finally time for a woman?
Out of the 10 mayoral candidates in the upcoming administrative elections, only three female candidates are on the ballot. Who are they?

Alessandra Richetti is Movimento 5 Stelle’s (5 Star Movement) candidate. Born in Trieste in 1963, Richetti works as an IT technician at the University of Trieste. She is also the president of Trieste’s 6th circumscription. Richietti sustains that Trieste should become “a city ready for ecological transition, which gives voice to various rioni (districts), promotes intelligent tourism and valorizes its scientific grandeur.”

Tiziana Cimolino is Europa Verde’s candidate. General practitioner, Cimolino has been part of the local environmental movement for years. Sustainable mobility, free public transport and support to workers and people in need are all part of her election manifesto.

Aurora Marconi, born in Trieste in 1945, is Trieste Verde’s (Green Trieste) candidate. Her campaign proposals are concentrated on environment and giving support to the destitute. Marconi also suggests giving voice and more power to the neighborhoods of Trieste through representation in administration.
The two candidates, Richetti and Cimollino, had major endorsements from unions, and elected officials. There’s a possibility that either of them will gain momentum in the final week of the campaign. It however remains to be seen if the glass ceiling may finally shatter in this year’s election.
