The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has announced support for a new initiative aimed at ensuring access to higher education for individuals serving prison sentences or under community-based criminal penalties.

The project, developed in collaboration with the universities of Trieste and Udine, emphasizes the importance of constitutional principles regarding education and seeks to guarantee these rights for those in the criminal justice system. It will operate in close coordination with the regional branch of the prison administration and the interdistrict office for external criminal enforcement.

The initiative is designed to provide students with guidance, tutoring, classroom instruction, and administrative support to facilitate participation in university programs. According to Alessia Rosolen, the regional councillor for universities, the effort will allow participants to engage in coursework, internships, and other educational activities that support social and professional reintegration.

The regional government approved a framework agreement on Tuesday to formally launch the program, called “Friuli Venezia Giulia Hubs for University Access During Criminal Sentences.” The agreement will be signed by the universities, the regional administration, and relevant criminal justice offices, establishing a structure to coordinate educational activities and collaborations.

Operational details and specific partnerships will be defined through subsequent agreements among the participating institutions. Funding for the project will come from regional resources as well as the European Social Fund Plus.

“These individuals will have the opportunity to access university courses, participate in educational services, and follow structured programs designed to facilitate reintegration into society and the workforce,” Rosolen said.
