Luigi Nacci will present his latest novel, Il tempo dei semplici (Einaudi), on Tuesday, April 7 at 6 p.m. at the Ubik bookstore in Trieste’s Galleria Tergesteo. Journalist Martina Vocci will join him for a conversation.
The book follows a son observing his aging parents — a father from southern Italy and a mother from a working-class Trieste neighborhood — as time reshapes their lives. Small changes, like a mother buying supermarket ravioli or a father conceding to broken objects, mark the passage of time, yet moments of tenderness and beauty persist.
Set against the city and surrounding regions, the novel highlights lives on the margins: a father in border barracks, a mother who rarely traveled, and young people from diverse backgrounds who navigate the world with practical skill rather than formal education. Through these “simple” eyes, Nacci presents a Trieste of quiet resilience beneath its celebrated façades.
