A small group of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) was spotted near Miramare for the second time in recent days, delighting researchers and visitors alike.

Four to five dolphins swam alongside a research vessel, performing playful dives and leaps that brought them within easy view of cameras. The group traveled from Zone A of the Miramare Nature Reserve past the mussel farms of Santa Croce before heading toward Monfalcone.

Experts say such interactions are typical for the species, which is highly social and known for advanced cognitive abilities. By swimming alongside boats or performing synchronized jumps, dolphins reinforce social bonds within their group. Riding the waves created by vessels also allows them to conserve energy by taking advantage of hydrodynamic forces.

In a sense, the dolphins “escort” the humans, while the humans provide a small boost in return.

Video footage was captured by Saul Ciriaco, with drone shots and editing by Tommaso de Lorenzi.
