On Sunday, March 1, Trieste’s civic museums will mark the first Sunday of the month with a slate of activities aimed at both children and adults, part of a program organized by the City of Trieste in collaboration with CoopCulture.

At the hilltop Castello di San Giusto, the day begins with “Alla conquista del Castello” (“Conquering the Castle”), a treasure hunt designed for children. Led by museum educators, participants move through the historic fortress in a staged game that blends storytelling with hands-on challenges. The activity is intended to encourage observation, teamwork and curiosity, while introducing younger visitors to the site’s history. Sessions are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. The cost is €10 per child.

Later in the morning, at 11:30 a.m., the castle will host “Benvenuti a San Giusto,” a 60-minute guided tour in Italian for adults. The visit traces the evolution of the complex from the Middle Ages to the present day, leading participants through the Courtyard of the Militias, the bastions, the external ramparts and the armory. The tour fee is €7 per person.

Additional guided visits are planned at the Risiera di San Sabba, the former rice-husking facility that was used as a Nazi detention and transit camp during World War II and is now a national monument. The tours, offered in Italian at 11 a.m. and in Slovene at 11:30 a.m., provide historical context and encourage reflection on the site’s role in 20th-century history. Admission to the guided visit is €7 per participant.

All activities require advance booking and can be reserved online through CoopCulture’s website or by calling the organization’s call center, which operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
