On Sunday, Feb. 1, the Neptune Fountain in Piazza della Borsa will be illuminated in blue to mark Italy’s National Day of Civilian Victims of War and Conflicts Worldwide.
The city of Trieste announced the initiative in response to requests from the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) and the National Association of Civilian War Victims (ANVCG).
The campaign, which carries the message “Stop the Bombing of Civilians,” is part of an ongoing effort by the ANVCG to raise awareness about the plight of civilians affected by armed conflicts and to advocate for their protection under international law.
Established by law in January 2017, the National Day serves three purposes: to highlight the suffering of civilians caught in wars across the globe, to promote respect for international conventions that safeguard them, and to encourage a culture of peace through diplomatic conflict resolution.
The blue illumination of the Neptune Fountain in Trieste is one of several symbolic gestures planned across Italy to commemorate the day and reaffirm the country’s commitment to civilian protection.
