The long-awaited Nodo di Udine railway project is moving forward under a new administrative framework, regional officials said, following delays that had previously stalled progress.

Cristina Amirante, Friuli Venezia Giulia’s regional councilor for infrastructure, emphasized that the current protocol—signed by the regional government, the municipality of Udine, and Italy’s national railway company RFI—provides a solid administrative path for the project. She noted that previous agreements had proved unworkable and that recent state intervention, including an additional €50 million in funding, has accelerated the process.

“The Nodo di Udine is a strategic project that has been anticipated for years,” Amirante said. “Thanks to the new protocol, we finally have a structured administrative process. The region is not designing the railway infrastructure itself, but it plays a decisive role in facilitating its advancement.”

Amirante acknowledged that the rising costs of the project reflect broader economic factors rather than regional mismanagement. She cited the effects of Italy’s superbonus 110% incentive program and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as contributing to cost increases across public works nationally. The region has implemented measures to support municipalities affected by these price rises, she added.

On the local political front, Amirante pointed to the resignation of a city councilor responsible for oversight of the Udine-Tarvisio line as a necessary step to ensure accountability and transparency.

“Procedures are advancing, additional resources are in place, and an effective protocol has been established,” she said. “Those raising unfounded doubts should recognize that the project is moving forward in a concrete, orderly, and transparent manner.”
