The mayor of Muggia, Paolo Polidori, has declared today a day of mourning following the tragic events that unfolded on Wednesday evening in this small coastal town near Trieste.
At noon, residents gathered in front of the Town Hall in Piazza Marconi for a minute of silence, accompanied by an honor guard, while the bells of the town’s cathedral tolled in mourning.
According to local authorities, the declaration follows a shocking incident that occurred in Piazza Marconi, where a 55-year-old woman is alleged to have killed her nine-year-old son by cutting his throat. The alarm was raised on Wednesday evening, reportedly by the child’s father, who lives abroad. When firefighters and police entered the apartment, they found a scene of extreme violence. The boy had been dead for several hours. The mother, a Ukrainian national known to local services for mental health issues, was taken into medical care for self-inflicted wrist injuries and later detained under orders from the judicial authorities.
In light of the tragedy, the official opening ceremony for the San Martino festival, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, has been canceled.
As the investigation continues, the community of Muggia remains in shock, coming together in silence to mourn the loss and reflect on the events that have shaken the town.
