The city of Trieste celebrated one of its own this week as Giacomo Covi, a 21-year-old local actor, was recognized for winning Best Actor in the Orizzonti section at the 2025 Venice Film Festival for his performance in Un anno di scuola(“A Year of School”).

During a ceremony at City Hall, Covi received the silver medal of the Municipality of Trieste, a gesture of appreciation for his contribution to cinema and for bringing international attention to his hometown. Surrounded by family and supporters, Covi reflected on the unexpected path that led him from everyday life in Trieste to the red carpet in Venice.

Directed by Laura SamaniUn anno di scuola is based on the short story by Triestine author Giani Stuparich. The film explores the emotional landscape of adolescence through Fred, the only girl in a class of boys, who struggles between self-acceptance and the desire to belong. Covi’s performance, praised for its authenticity and quiet strength, has been described by critics as one of the standout interpretations of this year’s festival.

For Covi, the recognition is the result of a serendipitous encounter. “I was working at a bar here in Trieste when Laura Samani came in one evening,” he recalled. “She was looking for young, non-professional actors. We talked, met a few more times, and she eventually chose me. I’ll always be grateful for that chance.”

The event in Trieste marked not only a homecoming but also a celebration of the city’s growing presence in Italian cinema. As applause filled the ceremonial hall, the young actor’s story served as a reminder of how talent — sometimes discovered in the most ordinary moments — can shine on the world’s most prestigious stages.
