Starbucks is reportedly exploring opportunities to open its first location in Trieste, the city historically known as the “city of coffee.” According to local newspaper Il Piccolo, the American coffee chain has shown interest in securing a commercial space in the city center, particularly around Piazza della Borsa and the historic Palazzo Dreher.
The company’s interest in Trieste is not new, Il Piccolo notes, but recent developments — including a strong surge in tourism, a growing presence of international retail chains, and the city’s rising profile — appear to have reignited its efforts.
While a specific location has yet to be confirmed, the choice to expand into Trieste would mark a bold move for the Seattle-based giant, entering a city with a deep-rooted coffee culture and long-standing local traditions. Starbucks’ potential arrival could target not only tourists and cruise ship passengers, but also younger locals and university students curious to try the brand’s signature offerings.
The report in Il Piccolo suggests that competition for prime retail space in Trieste’s historic center is intensifying, as global brands increasingly view the city as a strategic foothold in northern Italy.
Starbucks has yet to comment publicly on the report.
