A 21-hour nationwide rail strike is scheduled to disrupt services across Italy from the evening of Monday, July 7, through Tuesday, July 8, affecting travelers in regions including Friuli Venezia Giulia. The strike, involving staff from major operators Trenitalia, Trenord, and Italo, will begin at 9:00 p.m. on Monday and is expected to end at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
In an official notice, Trenitalia stated that while the strike may cause widespread delays and cancellations, a minimum number of essential services will be maintained during weekday peak hours—between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and again from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Full details on the services guaranteed during the strike are available on the company’s website.
For travelers who decide to cancel their journey, Trenitalia is offering refunds from the moment the strike is declared up to the departure time of the booked train. This policy applies to Intercity and Frecce trains. Passengers with tickets for regional trains may request refunds until midnight the day before the strike.
Alternatively, travelers can opt to reschedule their trip under similar transport conditions, subject to seat availability, the company said.
Trenord, which operates services in the Lombardy region, announced that trains scheduled to depart by 9:00 p.m. on Monday and arrive at their destination by 10:00 p.m. will operate as planned.
Further disruption is expected throughout the day on Tuesday, July 8, although official confirmation of affected routes in northeastern Italy, including Trieste and other parts of Friuli Venezia Giulia, is pending.
Travelers are advised to check with individual operators for updates and consult online timetables ahead of their journey.
