In a valiant effort to reclaim Sticco Mare’s waters from the aftermath of last year’s devastating storm surge, a team of marine conservationists took to the depths on Saturday morning. Led by the intrepid folks at Mare Nordest, around thirty volunteers, hailing from both the sports and environmental spheres, banded together to tackle the underwater debris plaguing the area.
Under the strategic guidance of Mare Nordest’s General Manager, Roberto Bolelli, divers from esteemed organizations like DEEP BLUE DIVE and Murena Diving Sporting Club Trieste went to work, diligently clearing the seabed of assorted waste.
Adding to the gravity of the mission, Fabio Scoccimarro, the Regional Minister for Environment and Energy of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, made a personal appearance, underscoring the significance of the cleanup operation.
Meanwhile, on terra firma, a dedicated team of volunteers, armed with gloves and a keen eye for detail, provided invaluable support to their underwater counterparts, sorting and disposing of collected debris with precision.
In a heartwarming display of environmental stewardship, efforts were made to minimize disruption to marine life. Monica Rana and Manuela Rizzo, the Environmental and Educational Outreach experts from Mare Nordest, ensured that any displaced sea creatures were promptly returned to their natural habitat.
Yesterday’s haul reads like a maritime scavenger hunt: from discarded fridge motors to beach loungers, the team unearthed a treasure trove of refuse littering the seabed. Yet, with each piece removed, Sticco Mare inches closer to reclaiming its underwater paradise.
